That said, there definitely IS a recent trend in the last couple of years to challenge and censor public library materials. Public libraries have generally built a better defense against these kinds of challenges, which arise every few decades. School libraries typically serve a different function than public libraries serve a narrower demographic answer to school administrations rather than elected or appointed library board trustees and respond very differently to parental panic and other political pressures. The libraries that tend to remove challenged materials in recent decades are mostly (but not exclusively) school libraries. Personally, I would put Maus in the Top 10 books I’ve ever read. If you are on the fence about reading it like I was, I strongly recommend it. That being said, it’s just one of those books that should be read by everyone to truly learn about the atrocities that happened in World War II. The story is absolutely heart-wrenching and will put you on the verge of tears. I have read other first-hand accounts of the Holocaust, but Maus resonated differently with me than the others. The story is about the experience of Art Spiegelman’s father as a Jew in occupied Poland and his time at Auschwitz. All I knew was that it was about the Holocaust and the characters were mice. After being on my reading list for about a year, I finally read Maus and now I wish I had gotten to it sooner.īefore reading Maus, I was vaguely familiar with it’s premise. The book was put back onto my radar when schools around the country started to ban it last year. I have heard about Maus and it’s praise for years, but I was hesitant to read it because it was a graphic novel. I will be completely honest, I have not read a graphic novel since I was in elementary school. Example: Hello.Įxplanation of our link flairs Join our /r/bookclub Don't forget /new!
